Teaching Experience

I am experienced in working with a range of children and teenagers. Whilst on my year abroad in Jordan, I worked as an Educator for an English-speaking French student sitting the Baccalaureate and taught them English, French and DT-Product Design over a year-long period. During university, I worked with GCSE and A-level students from my school, the Kings of Wessex Academy, where I taught both face-to-face and remotely in order to prepare them for their summer exams. This involved working to develop essay writing and exam technique so students could achieve the top grades. I also worked with students to complete UCAS applications and gain places at Russell Group universities and Oxbridge.

I volunteer as an English Educator as part of the refugee-based charity 'Steps' in Edinburgh, where I teach a Syrian refugee in college-level English once a week. Throughout school, I volunteered as a 'reading mentor' for children with learning disabilities. This taught me the patience, compassion and commitment required of a successful Educator. From teaching drama at the Bristol Old Vic Young Company, to teaching theatre and music in refugee children centres, I have had a diverse breadth of experience of working with children and teenagers. I have worked with students from 4-18 years old, on a range of different subjects. With younger students I aim to instil a sense of playfulness in the learning process, whilst with older students, I focus on revision, exam and essay writing strategies so they are able to work confidently on their own.

About Josephine H

I myself struggle with dyslexia and dysgraphia, and therefore, have developed coping mechanisms during my education that I share with my students. These mechanisms range from revision-based songs and games that helped me with GCSE and A-level revision to highlighting and editing techniques when doing university essays.

Alongside my academic studies, I am a passionate musician and have grade 8 piano, violin and classical singing. I also run various choirs at refugee help centres in Edinburgh on a weekly basis. Alongside teaching music, I am a dedicated employee at the Bristol Old Vic Theatre where I teach theatre classes to children aged 4-18 as part of their Young Company. I have been a member of the National Youth Theatre since 2011 and have worked as an ambassador there for the past five years. This involves helping run the intake auditions and acting as a mentor for around 50 children each audition day. I am also a member of Wind Up Penguin Theatre, a humanitarian theatre company that works in refugee camps around the world for prolonged periods of time. I was the team leader for the past two trips to Jordan and Lebanon where I used my Arabic language skills to help coordinate the trips. During each trip, we perform to and work with around 10,000 refugee children.
